Ferghana Valley or Ferghana is an intermountain depression in the upstream of Syr-Darya river and its sources surrounded with mountain systems the Pamir-Alay and the Tien Shan. The valley is notable for abundance and diversity of natural riches therefore people call it a pearl of Uzbekistan. Numerous monuments of the past, ruins of ancient cities, fortresses, and castles remained up to now in this place. The name of the city comes from the Persian word “Farghaneh” it means "various". The city is located in the east part of Uzbekistan, approximately 420 km to the East from Tashkent, the capital of the country, and 75 km to the southwest from Andijan city, at the height of 580 meters above sea level. More than 340 000 people live in the city. The territory of Ferghana is 70 km ². It is rather large industrial center of Uzbekistan, it takes the second place in production volume after Tashkent.

Ferghana is the homeland of the great astronomer, mathematician and geographer Ahmad Al-Fergani, the Central Asian thinker, scientist and philosopher and Islamic lawyer-fakikha Burhaniddin Al-Margilani who was appointed the title of Sheikh ul-Islam in the Islamic world. The city gave many outstanding art workers and sportsmen to the world. Such poets and writers as Uvaysi, Mukimi, Furkat, Mirzo Abdullo mahdum Bokiy, Hamza Hakimzade Niyazi, Abdullah Kakhar and cultural figures  Mukhitdin Kari-Yakubov, Yusufzhon Kizik Shakarzhonov, Tamara Hanum, Ergash Hamrayev, Mamurzhon Uzokov, Zhurakhon Sultonov, Tavakkal Kodirov, Nabi Rakhimov, Mukarram Turgunboyeva, Alexander Abdulov, Yulduz Usmonova, Shakhzoda; famous athletes Yury Sargsyan, Sergey Lagutin, Sergey Tetyukhin, Irina Tebenikhina, Andrey Fedorov, Vladimir Radkevich, Timur Kapadze and others were born in Ferghana.

Ferghana International Airport State Unitary Enterprise is nowadays a part of Uzbekistan Airways. It was founded in 1938 and resides at an elevation of 604 meters above sea level. It has one runway designated 18/36 with an asphalt surface measuring 2862 by 50 meters. After reconstruction the airport was certified with the 1st category by ICAO. Today the airport provides reception and release of all types of the aircrafts operated by Uzbekistan Airways.

In pursuance of the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Republic of Uzbekistan No. 173 dated 19.06.09  "About additional measures for extended introduction of the quality control system conforming to the international standards at the enterprises of the Republic ", and also of the Decision of the special working group of the Cabinet of Ministers No. 04-8-41 dated 04.02.2011on coordination of quality control system introduction, the quality management system (QMS)  has been implemented and functions at the Ferghana airport.

The plan of measures for 2015 aimed at improving of passengers and baggage service quality is developed for level control of the international standard in divisions.

According to the Decision of the Council of Uzbekistan Airways, in 2014 the recertification audit of the airport was conducted by the certifying body "the Russian Register - Central Asia". In accordance with the audit conclusion the certificate of the international sample on compliance of the enterprise to the ISO standard was issued for a period of three years.

Today regular passenger flights to the cities of Uzbekistan such as Tashkent and Bukhara, and Russia such as Moscow (in the airports Vnukovo and Domodedovo), St. Petersburg, Kazan, Krasnodar, Novosibirsk are performed from the airport. On the basis of the adopted aviation standards the whole complex of the services accompanying air transportation is provided to passengers: booking and sale of tickets, registration for flights.

Moreover the exchange office, buffet, the CIP hall, the separate area for VIP passengers, a first-aid post, mother and child room, ticket office, electronic flight information system for passengers are located in the building of air terminal.

The airport is located within the city boundaries and it is possible to get city center in 10–15 minutes by city transport so this testifies of compactness of the city planning and existence of the developed city transport infrastructure.
